UpChansa is a free, bilingual classifieds site for buying, selling, auctioning, swapping and giving things away across Ottawa-Gatineau. A bike your kid outgrew, a dresser taking up the basement, a box of toys nobody plays with anymore? For each one you have four options: sell it at a set price, put it up for auction, swap it for something you'll actually use, or give it away. Posting is free, and pickup happens between neighbours, on either side of the river.
One listing covers selling, swapping and giving away: you pick the options when you post.

Think of it as a garage sale that doesn't wait for Saturday. Give it a clear title, set your price in Canadian dollars, add a few photos and pick your city. Your listing goes live right away and stays up for 60 days. Buyers can send you an offer, and you accept it, decline it or counter with your own number. Payment happens directly between the two of you, cash or Interac e-Transfer, when you meet. UpChansa never touches the money and takes no commission right now.
How to post your first listing
You don't need to be an auction house: one item is enough. For things whose value is hard to guess (collectibles, tools, older furniture), let buyers set the price. You choose a starting price, an end date and, if you like, a reserve: bidders can see there is one, never the amount. You can add a buy-now price too. If someone bids in the last few minutes, the clock is extended automatically. When it closes, you and the winner are put in touch to arrange the handover. Running an online auction is free right now, and an existing listing can be turned into an auction with "Convert to auction".
How to run an auction
Your item for someone else's, with or without a cash top-up to even it out. Swaps work on regular listings (not auctions), and only when the owner has ticked "Open to exchange"; they can also say what they're looking for. To propose a swap, you pick one of your own active listings, so the other person sees your photos and decides for themselves. A counter-offer only changes the cash top-up, never the items. Once it's accepted, both listings are marked "Exchanged" and you arrange to meet. Nothing is charged for a trade, on either side.
How to exchange an item
Got something to give away? Tick "Free / donation" when you post, and your listing shows "Free" instead of an amount. Nobody can send you a cash offer; people who want it message you with "Contact seller", and you decide who gets it and when they pick it up. Tick "Open to exchange" as well and someone can offer you something in return. Once it's gone, mark it sold at $0 so it comes off the page. To find free stuff, tick "Free / donation" in the filters.
How to post a listing
If you live here, Ottawa and Gatineau are one place, so this page treats them as one. When you post, pick your city (Ottawa or Gatineau) and, if you like, add your area under "Neighbourhood / sector": Orléans, Kanata, Hull, Aylmer… Only the city and area are shown; your address stays private unless you tick "Show my street address on this listing" yourself. For now, most items are on the Gatineau side, so Ottawa buyers should plan to come across the river for pickup.
The whole site is bilingual, in French and English. Each listing stays in the language its owner wrote it in.
UpChansa puts you in touch; the payment and the handover are between the two of you. A few simple habits:
In Ottawa, the police set aside parking spots for completing trades arranged online. See the Ottawa Police Service "Safe Trade Zones"
Yes. Right now, posting a listing, running an auction, swapping and giving things away cost nothing, and UpChansa takes no commission on sales. Only the optional features that put a listing in front of more people are paid. If a fee ever applies, it is shown to you before you pay anything.
Yes. Pick Ottawa as your city when you post, and add your neighbourhood if you like. For now, most items are on the Gatineau side, so plan to come across the river for pickup.
Directly between the buyer and the seller, cash or Interac e-Transfer, when you meet. UpChansa never handles the money.
The owner ticks "Open to exchange" on their listing. You offer one of your own active listings, with or without a cash top-up. They accept, decline, or counter on the top-up. Swaps don't apply to auctions.
Both, fully. You can switch at any time; each listing stays in the language it was written in.
Yes. UpChansa is young and growing one listing at a time.
Now you know what to do with what's sitting in the basement. One listing, a city, a photo, and neighbours on both sides of the river can see it.
